It's a real pity that the whole class wasn't able to share in our excursion last Wednesday. It was a beautiful sunny day and the students who came had a good time. We explored some of the significant areas of Sydney's past which help to throw light on to the places being researched for the oral presentation. I'd like to sincerely thank the students who attended and commend you on your behaviour on the day. Everyone got on well together and eagerly went where they were told and completed the activities in the Rocks Discovery Museum with enthusiasm and good humour!
Thank you!

Week 5

G'day all

I'm sorry about not posting anything last week but I just ran out of time. I also wanted you to work on researching the topic for your oral presentation so I felt it wasn't imperative to set class work for you to do. How is your research coming along?

This morning we started looking at the topic of Media. If you have time, open this link, click on Topic 8 print off the text and then open Topic 9 to see the questions. Complete the activity.

If you still have time, search for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Daily Telegraph. Look at the front page of each. Choose a story from one paper and write a short summary of it in your blog. If you try answering the questions- who, what, when, where and why or how, you should be able to put the summary together. Remember to include the title and source. Use your own words to retell the events.

Good luck! Don't forget our excursion on Wednesday! We'll confirm tomorrow that it's happening if we see an adverse weather forecast!

Week 3

G'day all

I hope all you mothers had a lovely day yesterday and that your families spoiled you rotten! What did you do to 'celebrate' the day or what did your families do for you? Was it Mother's Day in your birth country too? Put a short comment at the end of this blog answering the above questions.

Did you enjoy working on The Big Scam last Monday? I don't think everyone has handed in the worksheets yet! I hope I get the rest of them today!

I talked last week about using PowerPoint as part of your oral presentation so today you can start practising using it! Have a look at this YouTube video explaining how to use it. If you need to get more information then have a look at some other links for help. My home internet is running very, very slowly because my daughter has been downloading a lot of shows recently so I couln't do anything on the blog at home. As a result,  I couldn't access my little  presentation!

When you have had a look at the tutorials, then it's time to start a little practice. Choose an Australian animal. Look up some information and pictures of it and make a little PowerPoint presentation. If you don't finish then remember to save it on a USB so you can retrieve it next week.

Good luck! Happy blogging!

Week 2

South Cronulla
G'day all

I hope you had an enjoyable weekend. The weather was lovely again wasn't it? My husband and I met some friends for breakfast in Cronulla yesterday. It was so busy because it was such a lovely morning! The sun was so bright I actually had a problem taking the photo!

Last week I tried to create a Facebook group for this class but I couldn't get anything to upload! Perhaps today I'll just get your Facebook details and try from home!

Today I'd like you to publish your recount about the holidays if you haven't already done so. Then I'd like you to go this link and complete the activity.  Follow the text and you'll have no problem working out who dunnit????

If you get through that, talk to me and I'll give you something else to work on!

Have a good week and happy blogging!

Term 2, Week 1

G'day all and welcome back to term 2!

I hope you had an enjoyable break and that you managed to do a couple of fun things! Why don't you log on to your blog and write a short text about how you spent your holidays! Include any photos if you took some!

I'd like you then to think up some questions you could ask someone about their holidays. Once you're sure the grammar is correct, interview one of your classmates. Record the conversation and then upload it to your blog! We'll have to see how the internet is working today to see if we can do this from here! Always a challenge!

That's all for today. If you finish these 2 tasks then I'll direct you to something else!

Happy blogging!

Week 8

G'day all

Hard to believe that this is the last class for term 1. I hope you have good plans for the holidays! I know I have!

Today is a chance for you to catch up on any outstanding work that needs to be done as well as a little bit of fun!

Log on to VOKI and sign up! Choose an avatar and create a little story. Try to use the microphone and record your story! I wasn't too successful with the voice recording only because the name I chose was pronounced incorrectly! Have a play and see what you can create.

When you're happy with your selection, send me a comment to let me know you've posted your creation.

Now, finish off any outstanding work. Not everyone has done the research on the famous Australians on the banknotes!

If you're looking for something else to do then open Issues in English 2 from the menu selection in the Programs and choose a topic to work on!

Have an enjoyable break and try to have a bit of a break in between doing your 'homework'!

Happy blogging!

Voki

G'day

Isn't she cute? I created her through Voki! Why don't you sign up and create your own stories in English. You can record your own voice or type the text you want spoken! it's lots of fun!

Week 7

G'day all

Well, I'm sure you're all keenly looking forward to the Easter break and the extended time off! It'll give you a chance to work on some homework and assignments!!

If you get to have a break, perhaps you'd like to visit the Easter Show out at Homebush! It's a great way to spend a few hours looking at the farm animals, fresh produce and handicrafts from around the State. It can also be VERY expensive unless you can curb your spending or have a strict budget! To find out all about the event, log on to the Moodle and  print off the worksheet for Topic 6 and complete the activities via the web link.

This morning we read about people on our Australian banknotes. Choose one of these people and look them up on the web. Write down some key facts about their lives on a timeline. Put the info in your blog.
If  you haven't had a chance to complete the activities from last week then please take the opportunity to do so today.

I'll be checking your blogs over the next couple of days and I expect to see some recent content.

Have a good week and have a very Happy Easter. Enjoy a blog free day next Monday!

A bit of fun!

G'day all

Found this on EFL classroom and thought I'd share it with you! Who would have thought that a Pink Panther video could provide so many English verbs! If you feel like a challenge, then use the verbs to write a recount of the video! I wonder how many verbs you can use?

Find more videos like this on EFL CLASSROOM 2.0

Week 6

G'day all

I hope you all had an enjoyable weekend! I had a lovely time and celebrated Ireland's National holiday yesterday! I didn't get stuck into the Guinness as I don't like it but I did wear green!

Last week you worked on some grammar so today it's time for some more listening and reading. As we mentioned this morning, you'll hear Heather and Sue talking about their favourite places. It's a good example of extended dialogue that could be part of Stage 2 in the IELTS speaking test.

Click on this link, watch the video and complete the worksheet.

On Thursday this week the college will be celebrating this year's Harmony Day event. Have you ever heard of this? What do you think it means? Click on this link to find out what's the themefor this year. When you've looked at the 2 short videos, click on the link to Harmony Heroes (on the left of the page) and read about this year's hero. In your blog, write a few sentences about Thomas Kenneally.

Next Saturday evening, the 23 March  there will be a world wide environmental event taking place. Do you know what it is? How long has it been running? Will you take part?
Do a Google search and see what info you can find. For example, how long has it been running, how many countries take part and anything else you think might be useful. Write up your answers as a short informal report in your blog.

Well, that should keep you busy for a while!

Happy blogging!

Week 5

G'day all

I hope your weekend was good and that you rested up so that you can survive another week in class!
Today's work is mainly practising a bit of grammar. This morning we did a bit of work on the article 'the' but here are a few more exercises to practise this. Try this link for some more!

Anne said you wanted to do some work on the passive voice too so have a look at these activities and see how you go!

If you have a look at this English language site, you'll find many many activities on every aspect of English grammar imaginable! the website opens at the home page so click on Grammar Activities and go for broke!

For those of you who want to have a break from grammar, have a look at Study English from the Australia Network. Here you can listen to the text and complete the written activities too. It's full of good ideas for English language learners. Have a look around the rest of the site too and explore what it has to offer!

Well, have a good week and happy blogging!

Week 4

G'day all

I hope you had a good weekend. Did any of you take part in Clean Up Australia yesterday?

There were some very good suggestions on the Wallwisher last week for improving your Reading Skills. Well done!

Today's Wallwisher tips are for improving your conversation skills! Have a look at my suggestions and try to add to the list!

Can you remember some things from your childhood? What did you get up to? Did you like to dress up? Were you naughty? Were you ever teased? Were you ever grounded? Did you giggle a lot? Did you ever run away from home? What did you want to be when you grew up? Watch and listen to Daniele and Ryan tell some anecdotes from their childhoods. (Daniele has an English accent and Ryan's accent is American). Use the questions on the sheets to help you understand.

You have to go through my Moodle to access the video. When you click on the link, you will be asked to enrol in the Moodle. Ask me for the enrolment key so that you can do this. Here is the link for the Moodle and the video is Topic 16.

Hope you have fun with this! When you've finished the worksheets, you can hand them to me to check for you. Then, as further practice for summary writing, you can write a summary on the blog or write an anecdote of your own! Too much? Well do what you can! It's all practice for English!

Have a good week and happy blogging!

Week 3

G'day all

I hope you've had a good weekend and that you didn't get caught in Saturday's wild weather!

How about a quick memory test? Last week you saw a video which suggested 23 things you could read!

Have a look at this wallwisher and post a sticky with either your own suggestion for what you could read or use one from the video! First in, best dressed, because you're NOT to repeat a suggestion made on the wallwisher so READ what your classmates post before posting your suggestion!

When you've finished with this you can spend a few minutes getting up to date with the activities of the last 2 weeks if you haven't done so.

You may or may not know that next Sunday is Clean Up Australia Day. What is Clean Up Australia? Who started it and why? Who can be involved? How do you become involved? What do you have to bring with you? Where do you go? What's happening in your local area? Is there a clean-up activity happening there?

To find the answers to these and other questions, I'd like you to do an internet search for Clean Up Australia. I'd like you to find at least 3 sources of (print) information/references about the event. Include one newspaper reference! Then write up a summary of the topic which answers the questions I posed earlier and any other relevant information. Remember to include the references to the sites you used.

You are to show me a draft of your work which can be handwritten or typed but NOT PLAGIARISED!!!! DO NOT COPY CHUNKS OF TEXT.

Well, that should keep you busy for a little while!

Happy blogging!

Week 2

G'day!
I hope you've all had a beaut weekend. I must say I was stoked to see the sun out again as it meant that I got the washing dried! There's nothing worse than wet washing!
Well, this arvo there are a few things for you to do.
Firstly, finish writing up your first blog post and get me to have a gander at it before you publish it.
Secondly, work out the meaning of the words/expressions in bold!
Thirdly, have a look at this link and write a comment at the end of this post about the message the speaker wants you to remember! (There are also very useful YouTube links on the right with suggestions for increasing fluency in speaking too!)
Then, open this link and look at the first 2 videos. (One-minute video and Isabel's story) When you've done this, come and tell me the 'message' you learnt from the second video. If you have time you can try the entry level tests!
And to finish off, read this text and answer the comprehension questions. Tell me your score!
Before you go, have a look at this refreshing short film which was awarded 2nd place in the 2013 Sydney Tropfest last night!

Well, hope you complete all today's activities!
'Aveagoodweek and keep blogging!

Welcome to 2013

G'day all

Welcome to our online classroom! Here you will do activites of a varied nature every week. You'll practise different English skills as part of your course. You may be reading, writing, listening or even practising pronunciation! We'll even try to post some audio or video online too! Most of all, I hope you learn something and have some FUN whilst doing it!

Today, I'd like each of you to create your own blog! It's really easy! All you need is an email address to get started! To begin, just click on the Blogger icon on the top left of this page and follow the prompts to create a blog! Please ask me if you're not sure what to do! Good luck!

When you've done that you can post some information about yourself! You can add things about where you come from, what brought you to Australia, what your hope and dreams are etc. You can even add links and photos to make your text more interesting! Ask me how!!!

When you've done that you can work on the following activity.

As you know Thursday is Valentine's Day. Do you know the origin of this day? Is it celebrated in your country? If you are in a relationship will you celebrate this event? What will you do for your partner or him/her for you? What was the most romantic Valentine's Day you've had so far? Do you think it is good to celebrate this day?  To help you answer these and other questions, try the webquest activities from the worksheet I've given you.

While you can answer the questions on the sheet, you'll need to present your final work on your blog. Here's what to do, write a short post in your blog summarising the history of St Valentine's Day and then in another paragraph give your opinion of the event!
Good luck and happy blogging!
